Things could be a lot worse so I’m trying to look on the bright side but think I’m entitled to have a moan occasionally as he’s not getting the experience he deserves but is still paying a huge amount of money for it - or rather I am!
I agree, it didn’t help that uni’s / government told students that they’d try and make it as close to normal as possible with face to face classes otherwise I bet a large percentage of them wouldn’t have gone at all .
Hindsight is a wonderful but useless thing !

We have a foot in both camps.

Dd19 took a gap year last year. Was going to do loads of travel. Got a job in a call centre instead and got herself some money before her course started. Took up her place this year in Swansea, so we have had Welsh and English lockdowns to navigate. She is with her partner so is very happy and using the lack of socialising to get really great marks on assignments. She has a part time job through uni teaching English to refugees.

Dd18 took a gap year this year, she didnt get the grade she wanted, so took the chance to study like mad and take chemistry a level last month. She is now working as an exam invigilator to get some money under her belt before hopefully getting the course she wants (or acceptable alternative) next year.

Things have worked out reasonably in the circumstances for both of them, they have both been flexible, thought outside the box jobs wise and made the most of it. Just hoping we can get together for Christmas. Fingers crossed.

That's not great. Take one of our 10 credit courses for example, we are providing about one hour of teaching content, essential reading, weekly activities based on the lecture content (with feedback from lecturers each week) and then fortnightly seminars (with group tasks to undertake in the in between weeks in preparation for the seminars). I have to tell myself not to take it personally when I read stories about what a rubbish deal students are getting as I know we are doing a lot (if anything our students are saying they can't keep up with it all), but of course it's not like that everywhere... and probably even where I work its varying from department to department.
