We took a drive up north through Tarpon Springs where they have a thriving little sponge industry, and on up to Homossassa Springs State Park - saw lots of manatee up there out of season (June).
Took us about 2 hours from Clearwater. Great day out. |

I second Diane's suggestion. Homassassa Springs is a lovely place to visit. Very relaxing and easy to get to.
Further down from the springs is Hudson Beach then on to New Port Richey and Tarpon springs. Nice drive from Orlando through some really nice countryside. We usually visit this area at least once on our visits to Florida. Her indoors loves the manatees at Homassassa Springs
