RHO is a good one, right by Dam Square. Offers a fab breakfast but the hotel is very dated!
We recently stayed at NH city centre which was lovely! The breakfast was excellent. It was about a 5 min walk from Dam Square.
My sister recently stayed out of town and caught a tram in, not sure what hotel though. To her the cost was paramount so staying out was certainly a cheaper option with not much fuss. I have always stayed centrally for convenience but there are many options!

We stayed at NH Caransa in Rembrandtplein . I bought through Priceline. Two rooms for around £120. Great location , we walked everywhere, though there was a tram stop outside.

Hotel Die Port Van Cleve. Excellent location and quirky. All the rooms are different as the hotel is what was the original Heineken brewery.

Stay at the Banks Mansion hotel. Very central and all inclusive for drinks. At 5pm every day they bring out a cheese board and nibbles. Breakfast is outstanding.

Thanks everyone - much appreciated - lots to check out! Specially as liked the look of the Doubletree the other day when I looked at it but when I just checked again the price has gone up (inc. breakfast) by £67 on sites like booking.com etc. Not sure why! It was always more expensive on hotel website. Missed the boat there!

We stayed at the Crowne Plazza in the business district - not in the city centre but free and quick transfer from the airport (may have changed as a few year back). It has excellent quick, frequent (& cheap) train links to the city centre.

Upgrading to Club level gave us access to executive lounge with ample snacks & drinks to make the cost very worth while for our family of 4... note a lot of UK broker sites won't let you book kids over 12 years BUT we confirmed direct with the hotel that they happily accept kids as being up to 16 years being an American chain(might even have been 18 ? ). So we booked them on a UK site as under 12 but confirmed with the hotel they were over.
