fainting after blood donation

I have been regularly donating blood for around 20 years. Today is the first time I have nearly fainted. Not there, but when I got home. Felt very weak, sweating a lot, felt cold and faint. Laid down on sofa where I am now - 3 hours later. I did eat and drink plenty. I try to stand up and all is okay for a few seconds then feel a bit light headed again.

Has this happened to anyone … how long did it take to feel better? Anything particular you did to help?

Thanks

I have nearly fainted at the blood donor centre before, they kept me lying with my feet propped up. I stopped donating after a second bout of dizziness.
Just rest and get up really slowly when you feel up to it.

I often used to feel light headed after donation, did you get up to move too fast? If it happens next time I would think about not giving for a few call up times

I donated for many years and finally thought it was time to give up and look after me! I felt I’d done my bit. I don’t have a common blood type anyway, so it’s not in big demand here.

Happened to my husband. He had donated regularly and had done about 30 pints then, the last two times he did it, he fainted. Gave up after that, which was a shame.

It happened to me a couple of times and now they get me to eat crisps or a biscuit before I donate to make sure I’ve eaten enough beforehand.

I have come close at the Centre once during a heatwave but also felt like you did a few times at home. I find having a cold drink afterwards rather than a hot drink helps loads and I try not to rush around too much afterwards.

I think they do say to let them know if you experience things like this. They will probably note it on your file and may give you extra rest next time. Hope you feel better soon.

I fainted a couple of times directly after blood donation. Found taking a mars bar to have along with my cup of tea helped, then made sure I had plenty to drink for the rest of the day.

If still feeling bad give the donor people a ring for advice - here is the number from their website.

"If you need further advice or experience any prolonged after effects from your donation please ring 0300 123 23 23."
