British airways flight back delayed over 4hrs! Meal/drink voucher query?

Hi all, sadly we have been delayed on our return flight, BA texted me that instead of 6.30pm it's delayed until 10.45pm! we have pretty much exhausted all our spending money just a few $s left, does anyone know if we are entitled to any food/drink vouchers?

Many thanks!

Yes, you are. EU rules apply to EU licensed carriers when the flight either departs from, or arrives in to, the EU. It will probably mean going to the airport though, so you'll then be hanging around there instead of somewhere potentially more comfortable. You may also have an uphill struggle to get the vouchers, and then find they are quite limited. But you are entitled to them!

I think this only applies if the flight is more than 4 hours late landing in the uk, so may not apply if time is made up on the flight. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Our flight was delayed by three hours. We got refreshment vouchers when we checked in. I can't remember how much we got (possibly $15 each) but it was enough to pay for a meal at chillis. We just needed a bit of extra cash for the tip.

Thanks very much, fingers crossed then for something. It is more than 4hrs so I'll look into to the compensation, is that through holiday insurance or direct from airline?

It's not 4 hours when you leave, it's 4 hours when you arrive. If they make up time, you're out of luck. It's direct from the airline, after you've made a claim when you get back.

Its your landing delayed time that triggers compensation, not your delayed take off time.

You are correct. The flights from the US generally arrive early so it could land within 4 hours of arrival time, also its from the arrival time of the last flight so if you are on a connection and still arrive at your final destination on time you are not entitled to anything.

As to receiving vouchers for drinks and meals you will need to get them from BA staff at the airport. Last time I was delayed on a BA flight I was given vouchers without any prompting from myself.

Has BA told you to check-in and arrive at the airport at the normal time? Usually this is the case as sometimes the flight will leave earlier if its possible to reduce the delay in anyway. If BA haven't told you to arrive at a later timer I would still arrive at the airport at the original scheduled time.

It's a FIVE hour delay to arrival which triggers the full refund clause. The cynic in me says this is why so many EU flight schedules are so generous with their timing!

Travel insurance policies have different cover for delays, which may be in place of or in addition to what the airline offers. You need to read your fine print!
