Villa burglary

Just heard from my friend who is currently in Orlando. Their villa has been broken in to and from what I can gather from her short message, they’ve had their suitcase stolen which included all their passports. Not sure if/what else was taken, and if the passports were already in the case, or if they case has just been used to haul items away. Either way, still an awful thing to happen, especially on holiday. They’ve spent the last 2 days trying to sort everything and get emergency travel documents which has cost them a small fortune.

Sheriff can’t fathom how the property has been accessed, and have surmised either a lock has been picked or it was someone with a key!

What an awful way to end what looked like an amazing holiday.

No real reason for posting this other than to say, please be vigilant when staying in a villa (or anywhere else for that matter). Whilst for the majority of us this will never be an issue, it always pays to ensure valuables are hidden away as best you can and if your villa has a safe, please use it.

That's a dreadful thing to happen. Especially when you are away from home. Hope they enjoy what is left of their holiday. Maybe they can claim on their holiday insurance for stolen items and out of pocket expenses.

Many villas have safes, it's a good idea to use them.

Oh how awful. That’s my worst nightmare for something like that to happen it on holiday. I hope they can claim the expense back on insurance.

It happened to us 2 years ago. Thankfully most valuables were in the safe at the time. Access was through a window.

Sorry this has happened to your friend, sadly it doesn't matter where you go in the World, there will always be opportunists who do this & spoil peoples holidays. I don't know their circumstances as to how this happened but my tip to anyone reading this thread is always carry a paper copy of your passport with you, I do. It may just help as some form of identification in the event of something like this. Double check everybody's room that they have locked things away, check doors, windows & if your as stupid as me, when you go out the door, shout "See you later Mum, John Boy, etc!" as if someone has remained in the Villa and drive around the block once or twice. Half the time, most of us are excited or half asleep, shattered when we are leaving our rooms, Villas etc so may not be quite so vigilant, it only takes an extra 5/10mins but yes, it may not make a blind bit of difference in every scenario but its worth a try...
