Changing Virgin Car Hire Insurance
Hopefully someone can help, I've booked a Flydrive through TCD with Virgin, I opted to only choose basic insurance as I was advised by a friend that I could book car hire separately and just not pick up the Virgin car.
I've not been advised by another friend that this isn't possible Does anybody have any experience of this or what my options now are with regards to changing insurance, hiring a different care and not picking up car etc Thanks Mat

Hi,
You should be fine to either: - leave the car you've hired and book another one independently Or - ring up and see how much it would cost to upgrade car and insurance. Worth comparing to see what is a better choice. There is nothing preventing you from not using the car including in the original package.

Some people have just taken the basic insurance and then bought one separately to cover the rest, plenty of companies do it and they are a lot cheaper than virgin.

So if I'm understanding this, we can buy a insurance policy to bridge the gap
in cover...

That's right, I looked into it a couple of years ago after reading threads about it on here, found lots of companies but just used virgin in the end.
At the end of the day its just another insurance policy and don't know about the 98% not recommending it, as with all insurance you would have to make sure that you read the policy very carefully to make sure that it gives you what you want.

The problem with Insurance is you dont know what its like until you claim.
My Daughters partner was in his car when another car jumped the barrier on the M1 recently. He is having a nightmare claiming for his tools, loss of wages and physio he needs. Plus his mate whose car it was is also facing issues as the other driver who undoubtedly fell asleep is claiming mechanical defect. Bad enough in the UK but I wouldn't want that hassle if the bump was overseas. The car.

Here is another thread where we discuss in detail the merits of an independent insurance policy including a decent option for such a policy: https://www.thedibb.co.uk/forums/sho... php?t=1027989
As Tom has said, you won't know how good it is until you have to claim. The certainty of having an Alamo policy (Or whatever rental company you use) is they sort everything and provide a new vehicle with minimum amount of hassle.

As well as the insurance you usually have a large deposit held on your credit card as well. I dont have a large credit limit so wouldnt want a large deposit held on it. I have found that the likes of netflights and ebookers in the UK offer fully inclusive zero excess car hire so you have peace of mind on the validity of the insurance plus if you have a mishap you dont have to pay any excess.
Having driven the side of a brand new Nissan Rogue all the way against a pillar in a car park at Christmas i can verify that the zero excess and insurance works well with Alamo. |
