My doctor issued a private prescription last year and that’s fine, I don’t mind paying but this year they won’t give me anything. I’ve got a phone appointment on 8/10 so hopefully they may say yes then.

Have you tried any mindfulness or relaxation techniques ?
There are several apps that you can get for your phone which will take you through these techniques quietly at home - please try them - it’s something to have to keep doing daily but could have enough of a positive effect that you might not need prescription medication. The added benefit is that you can also use these techniques for other times that you feel anxious.

There is a push for GP’s (and other prescribers) to avoid writing prescriptions for ‘addictive’ medicines like benzodiazepines (such as diazepam) opioids and sleeping tablets. It’s even been in the news this week, i.e. telegraph/news/201...dictive-drugs/
I had a few sessions with a health psychologist for needle phobia and that really helped. I initially asked my GP for diazepam but he refused and referred me for counselling. Maybe you could give that a go if your GP refuses your request. |

One issue with prescribing diazepam for flying is if something happened to you on the flight and you were under the influence of a substance that dr or prescribed could be liable.. it is for patient safety, diazepam is a sedative and can cause slower response, it can also effect breathing in some people and put you at higher DVT risk...
it is not appropriate to prescribe for short term anxiety, and maybe CBT would be more effective. Diazepam can be highly addictive... it is also an illegal substance in some countries. Some GPS will prescribe but I won’t

You’re a doctor clearly. My daughter is so poorly on the flight it’s awful. For her the trigger is the moment the food is served as she has issues with certain smells. It is now in her head that she’s going to be sick and hey presto she’s sick. I am on the verge of taking her to the doctors but I’d prefer not to use diazepam but I’d do anything to help her make the journey easier. How can I help her, it would be good to get your opinion. She’s 18

We go to New York next week - DH got an NHS prescription 2 diazipan for £8.80 - which is fine cos he only needs one tablet there and one for the flight home. So he not likely to get addicted but still got enough tablets for the holiday.

Antihistamines. That’s all sea sickness pills are. If you get some stronger, drowsy ones. Think you have to ask for them at the pharmacy in Boots, they are not out on the shelves. They are called Boots Allergy Relief 4mg Tablets, Chlorphenamine Maleate.

Well I tried Kalms Day to see if they would help and they knocked me out immediately! Felt really groggy next day. Tried them again next night in case it was just a one off and the same thing happened! Diazepam calm me down and I don't feel as anxious but they don't knock me out!
