I love Boxing Day, we have everyone to our house, basically do Christmas Day again ! We have a blended family but everyone always comes on Boxing Day . We have a family quiz ( specialist subjects are chosen before ) 🤣 we even have a trophy ! We eat, drink and play games. Lots of fun and laughter. No pressure for anyone to come if they would like to do something else but everyone usually appears.

Our Boxing Day is for friends.
I get up and potter about the kitchen, turning my leftovers into new dishes (pies, curry etc) and baking mince pies and gingercake. Whatever I produce becomes a buffet for that evening. I enjoy cooking that day with no pressure. My 5 best friends, their husbands and kids come over about 6pm and we have an easy night. It’s very much ‘come as you are’ casual, so their kids are often still in their PJs! There are about 23 of us all in. The kids disappear upstairs to share and show off their new toys and we all just have a drink and catch up. Folk just wander into the dining room to get some food whenever they fancy something. Some years it ends up a rowdy late one with the karaoke full bung! Some years it drifts off quite early. We just take it as it comes with no expectations.

I love Boxing Day!
Most years we’ll have guests - this year we’ve got both sets of parents (mine and husbands) staying so we’ll have a relaxed breakfast then a brisk walk if it’s dry. I like to cook around a theme on Boxing Day - last year we did morrocan, this year we* are cooking indIan: - some sort of fizz based cocktail for the grown-ups -fish tikka - veg samosa - monkfish curry (fragrant rather than too spicy for the kids) - chicken biryani - sag aloo - rice - (bought) naan - cardamom rice pud * When I say we, I mean ‘me’. I cook. Husband makes sure my champagne glass is topped up |

We flip Xmas day and Boxing Day. A few years ago we decided that none of us wanted the pressure of cooking for 13 on Xmas day as its exhausting and no ones house is really big enough to seat everyone. Problem was Xmas day meal out is VERY expensive so we have everyone here on Xmas day and we do a buffet. We do curries, pastas etc. We then go out for Xmas dinner on Boxing Day. This year at our local hotel Xmas day is £80 per head but the day after its £23.95. The only difference in the menu is we don't get a glass of pros secco when we arrive, there is no sorbet between the starter and main course and if you want a mince pie with coffee you need you pay. So for the £56 difference its a bargain. My nieces other half is a chef so he works Xmas day but is off Boxing Day so a bonus is he can come too. Works for us.

OP I wouldn’t go... last year I read the book the lifechanginng magic of not giving a f*ck. not sure if you have heard of it, but it changed my thinking about going to things like this which in the past I would have felt were obligatory.. they’re not. If it doesn’t make you happy, and you have other options, take them.
This year we will be having a second Christmas Day at my parents house when my brother and his OH come down. I can’t wait for old turkey sandwiches with red cabbage. Hope you can come to a decision that makes you happy! |
