Settle an argument for me
I’m not going to say which side of the argument I fall on yet.
So In our care home we serve soups with the evening meal. It’s made the day before and reheated to serve. We have a resident that often has her family with her at the start of tea so won’t have her soup til she’s gone. Then she wants the soup reheating a second time. Sometimes the soup has meat in it, often it’s some kind of vegetable. How many times would you say it’s safe to keep reheating? |

Ooh. As someone married to a caterer and therefore constantly reminded of 'the danger zone' and stuff like that...!
I have always been told you don't reheat anything more than once. Maybe you could put some in a bowl while it is still cold, and put it in the microwave for her later?

Officially as above but if it was for me at home I would be ok with reheating it again. But then if I am sick I know it's my own fault!

I would re heat it but well so it kills any bugs, I would re heat it probably 3 times, but get it boiling and then cool it down before she eats it!
Ps that’s probably the wrong answer

I would be quite happy reheating soup more than once.

I have also always been told to never re-heat anything more than once.
The putting the soup in a bowl before re-heating is a great idea.

NO. Because it's not the heating, it's the standing around cooling down that encourages bacteria. It's already stood around twice so unless you're going to boil it for ten minutes no

I don’t understand why this hasn’t been thought of before , if the lady is doing this on a regular basis the obvious thing is to put a bowl by for her to reheat later .
My answer to the OP is that I would be wary of reheating meat that has already been reheated so I wouldnt do it .

So I explained to her daughter the other day that I wasn’t allowed to keep reheating it and she complained about me.
One of the kitchen assistants has told her it’s ok to do but the kitchen manager has said I’m right and we shouldn’t be doing it. There might only be a slim chance of her getting food poisoning but why should I risk my job or anything. |

I think you're absolutely right.
At home, I would have no issue reheating soup for a second time, but in a workplace where you are responsible for the health and safety of others, definitely not. |
