Ahh the good old midgie. Smidge is good. you can actually get things that attract them and trap, stayed at a campsite in glencoe with them, pretty nifty.

Citronella candles are supposed to keep flying things at bay - a lot of places sell them: DIY places, probably the likes of Home Bargains, Wilkos, supermarkets, etc.
