We experienced this on the I4 one night going back to the villa from Universal. Hubbie had connect his phone by blue tooth to the jeep and it came up as if his phone number was calling. He took out his phone to see what was going on and it said a tornado had touched land nearby and go straight to shelter. Was a bit scary. We were staying in Champions Gate and turned out the turned was near the airport. Impressive system though!

DS26 lives in the Netherlands & they have alerts on their phones.
First time it happened on his phone soon after moving there (and I can't remember what for now) he had a mild panic until his DGF told him it was normal practice. If my phone goes off today I wont hear it. I work in a school & leave mine at home. Anyone who needs me rings the school.

I heard a very vague clip about it on Radio X news at 8am, that's the first time I'd heard and they didn't specify Android. I messaged my husband and family as they'd have panicked if an emergency alert on their phone had started going off - my husband is a teacher and you can imagine the disruption if half the mobiles in a classroom started going off!
We were in Kos last October when there was an earthquake and it triggered the emergency alert on mobiles. It was a very loud alert and a very fast and very clear way to spread a message. We got 2 of each alert - firstly in Greek and then in English. |

In the US they gave mobile phone lockers and you need to put the phone in there and take the key - certainly when we went to a cinema in Palm Springs that was the rule and my local friends said it is what they do in schools and such like. Getting used to not having a mobile for a short while must be good for school children.

I have just tipped off my family with special mention to people who are supposed to have their phones off in school but sometimes seem to forget (although they remember to put them on silent).

I live in Suffolk within 30 miles of sizewell, we were bombarded with messages that an alert was being tested here last month, we all spread the message and waited with baited breath. Nothing happened, heard that a very few houses right next to sizewell got an alert. To be honest we worked out that if there was a Tchernoby style incident at sizewell an alert would be no good for us anyway

They've gotten quite strict about mobiles at his school now and the students can have them on the school site but they should be turned off and in their bags. My niece is at primary school and they have a 'cloak room' type system for mobiles.
You're right about getting away from mobiles but in our family it's not the children! We used a mobile phone box a few Christmases ago so that none of us spent all day looking at our phones! My sister, mum and dad are awful for it. |
