Virgin flydrive
Hi all!
I’ve just been on a chat with virgin about changing flights dates but then received this after. “I have noticed you have the basic insurance on the car, please be aware of the following - Important Information - If you have booked the Basic car package you will be required to pay mandatory state taxes and fees upon arrival between $80-$150 per week. Our Fully Inclusive and Gold Plus package include all mandatory state taxes and fees. Our Fully Inclusive and Gold Plus also includes Collision Damage Waiver (Cover for your own hire car in the event of accident/damage with zero excess to pay) and Extended Third Party Protection up to $1 million (Cover to a third parties car) which would cost approximately $38 plus tax per day if purchased locally.” I’ve always booked the basic package but I don’t think I’ve ever paid extra in taxes. Has anything changed/do I need to upgrade the package? Thank you!

Hi, the basic package never includes any of the insurance. The fully inclusive and gold options do though. I think if you had booked the basic before you would have been asked to pay for the insurances. I don’t think they’d let you drive off without it.

Sorry but I would never accept Virgins basic insurance. The SLI is not just indemnity if you damage another car but it's third party liability as well i.e. injury to third parties.
If you injure someone in a car accident that was your fault the state minimum included by Virgin ($30k I believe) would hardly cover a couple of Bandaids. If you don't top up to $1m you may face bankruptcy in the above circumstances Mick

I’ve realised that I‘ve been an idiot and actually usually booked the flight and car through uscarhire which includes the insurance. Looks like I’m upgrading the package now 😭

That’s a really good point. I just assumed it would be the same as a similar basic package and not include nothing 🙃

No worries, I just never thought they’d sell a package that covers nothing 😑

Sadly Virgin (and Tui) fly-drives have had a very bad reputation on the DIBB for years about their basic insurance package being totally inadequate.
Strangely if you book a car independently through Virgin it will include the insurances. Mick
