Wow that's a big question especially the cost bit.
How it works is a little easier.
Unlike some timeshares you do not buy a designated week to visit you buy points so have the flexibility to use the points towards stays at any point in the year. You buy at your home resort. Ours is the Boardwalk and you can book stays from 11months out. A bit like flights 😀. Dependent on where you buy you can stay at other resorts but can only book these 7months out so you have to be lucky sometime with availability as some can get booked up quick especially at busy times.

Each night stay costs a number of points which differ dependent on the resort and the size of room you want and time of year and sometimes day of the week. You need to look at what resort you can buy into, look at when you may want to stay and for how long, what size room you want and work out how many points you would need. This then determine the cost.
You pay for the points and also pay an annual dues or maintenance fee so you need to factor that in every year. For 200 points at the Boardwalk last year the dues were about $1,300.
With our points we manage 2 weeks every 18months ish in school holidays in a studio for 3 of us.
you can bank and borrow points to use up to a maximum of 3 years worth of points together. So we aren't going this year so have banked 200 points into next year so when we go we will have up to 400 points to use. If we need more we could borrow from 20/21 year too up to a maximum of 600 points for our stay. But that would mean no more points till 21/22.

So it can be complicated but to answer some of the questions you need to look at
Resort you want
When you can visit
What size room you would want
Then you can estimate number of points and the cost.

Yes.

Example - Copper Creek - with some discount expect to pay $162 a point. So 200 points is going to cost you $32,400 plus some closing costs (couple of hundred $).

Sorry Mikej but I did burst out laughing on your last question
Costs : 2 Routes - Direct with Disney expensive, Resale can still be expensive but savings can be made on the larger resorts. After the initial outlay you also have Annual Dues, each resort's is different.
Your starting point needs to be when & how long,then where & how big.
As you've stayed at the Poly I'll use that, if you want to go for 2 weeks every year on cheapest season:
118/week studio = 236 200 points to buy at $235/point = £37k & approx £1k in dues every year
Every 2 years:
118/week studio = 236 120 points to buy at $235/point = £22.4k & £1300 in dues over 2 years

Mike-There seems to be confusion here as to you 'looking into DVC'- do you mean you were looking at renting points off an owner, or buying in? Two quite different things. Buying it is buying a real estate interest in the resort, and getting the right to use it every year. You have to pay annual maintenance fees (dues), but they are a lot less than it would cost to stay the same place cash. Renting is like renting a villa, you rent an owner's points off them for a single stay- generally paying about double what that owner will pay in dues each year because you don't own it and the owner rents for profit.
