Is the danger that, even with online check-in, bag drop might close? The UK airlines will hire an agency to handle their ground operations in the US - no guarantee they'll stay open after the scheduled close time.

I'd be tempted to do bag-drop but stay airside though.

I guess something to bare in mind, certainly something I’ve never thought about. A few years back our TUI flight was showing delayed by several hours, we saw it when we woke up, we extended our car hire and made use of the extra hours, turned up a couple of hours before the delayed time and no problem, I’d have hated to have waited at the airport for so long, I’m sure some didn’t check before they went and ended up doing that though.

We had a delay of 12 hours with virgin on Sunday and they didn’t message us till half an hour before we were due to arrive for checking when we were already on the way to airport to check in hire car. There were a lot of people at the airport already where their messages were coming through while in the check in line. Were told to keep receipts for food and drink as we MAY be able to claim then they turned up about 4 hours before new departure time with cold burgers and chips from McDonald’s which they left on the counter for about 2 hours.

As others have said, always arrive at the airport in time for your scheduled departure unless you've had a message from the airline to say otherwise. I've travelled with work and a few times have seen long delays when checking my flights before setting off for the airport and majority of times the delay has been way less and have always checked in at original scheduled time. So unless the airline says otherwise always go for the scheduled times.

Last week we were delayed from MCO, there were lots of storms in the area and the airport closed down for an hour, we were just over an hour late taking off, the earlier Virgin flight was already delayed from the inbound and this took off later than us.

During the summer it is very normal for this to happen. They cant work with lightening in the area.

For a short delay like an hour I would arrive at original time,

Sometimes the return flight is quicker going back.I think that is factored in flight times as they try to keep their slot . If only an hour I would be at mco as planned . It can get very busy .
