Blood clots and flying
Hi there,
Just wondered if anyone else has any experience of flying after being diagnosed with blood clots. I had blood clots during my chemo last year - treated with 6 months of dalteparin injections. Unfortunately last week more clots appeared in my arm, I am now on Apixaban - possibly for life. The consultant I saw last week was very reassuring and said that I would be fine to fly in June but my GP wasn’t so positive and now I am worried. Would love to hear from anyone with experience. I am following this up with the hospital just waiting to hear back. Thank you

I had a dvt about ten years ago. Was on warfarin for about six months, they told me that as long as my levels were ok I’d have been fine to fly.
I flew about a month after coming off warfarin with no issues. I take aspirin before each flight and wear flight socks. I always make sure to move around a lot more than I used to. My consultant told me that if necessary I could be given clexane injections to take before flights. Thankfully that wasn’t necessary. |

Thank you - they don’t check any levels with me but i suppose now that I am medicated again it puts me at much less risk of developing any more

With all due respect to GPs, given that the consultant specialises in these things, I would have far greater confidence in their opinion than a GP.
With all you seem to have been through, I hope all is fine and that you can get on and enjoy your holiday.

Me and my wife have both had DVT before. I’ve been taking Clexane injections for around 10 years and never had one until I forgot to take it before returning home from Dubai in 2019. It was only a micro clot so no treatment needed but it just proved to me how well the injections work.

Thank you…..i was on dalteparin injections and both times that I finished the course I ended up with more clots…now on Apixaban which is tablet form so easier to deal with.

Hi, with the Apixiban as soon as you start taking it you’ll be classed as being treated. No need for continual INR blood tests to achieve a therapeutic range like with Warfarin.
I’d listen to the consultant and not your GP. But for insurance purposes get it in writing that they have deemed you fit to fly |
