Train from Yorkshire to Heathrow?

Hi
Has anyone tok the train to Heathrow
We would be coming in from West Yorkshire
(I do live in North Lincolnshire now but for easiness its better to meet up with my parents first)

I have no idea how to plan this though, as Ive never been from Heathrow. But the drive is daunting in my gas guzzling car and the return journey would be a nightmare.

Does anyone have any pointers as to where and when to get tickets?

Thanks

Perhaps the easiest (but most expensive) way would be a train (LNER) from Leeds or Wakefield to Kings Cross, a taxi to Paddington and then the Heathrow Express to the airport. You can buy a through ticket and there are lower fares if you book well in advance and use a railcard if you can.

Certainly the most expensive but fortunately not the easiest .
Train to Kings Cross , then Piccadilly line direct to Heathrow is fewer changes and adds half an hour to the journey when you allow for taxi queues and change time.

I have done this journey and it was really straight forward.

I would book via the LNER website and the ticket price should reduce because you are a family travelling.

Yes, very easy. And unless you are travelling in rush hour, there should be plenty of space on the tube at Kings Cross. There are lifts all the way down to platform level too - worth figuring out in advance where they are.

Could you fly from Leeds Bradford into Heathrow? Not sure of cost but might be easier rather than doing the train? I think FlyBe do the route. Prob not helpful at all!

We have booked the train for the first time as we are going to Gatwick from Chesterfield and DH can't do long journeys anymore.
I used the Trainline app as it finds the cheapest/quickest route. DH and I used a two together railcard which saves 1/3 off the normal price. It tells you where you need to change and it books seats for you too.
It has cost us £200 for 4 return tickets so what with fuel prices and parking at the airport, I think it's a cheaper way to do it as well as easier and less stressful.

Have a look at some airport chauffeur type places too - we found it more cost effective and convenient than the train. It does depend on how big your party is however. Obviously if you are travelling alone it wouldn’t work out. We are just over 2 hours from Heathrow and over 3 hours from Gatwick and have used them for both airports.

I’ve done this lots of times and highly recommend the above. From kings cross just get on the Piccadilly line direct, no hassle changing.

If you just miss a Heathrow express at Paddington and have to wait then this route can be quicker and definitely less stressful.

I would also recommend getting a family railcard for the journey. You’ll probably make the money back on the first trip.

Trains don’t work like planes, so don’t book the day they release fares, you need to book an advance ticket and these come out later.

If you look on the LNER website they are now selling advance tickets up until September 15th and you can create a ticket alert for your dates so they’ll email you when advance tickets are on sale, the page you need to look at his here:

Just to add… railcards start the day you buy them, but you don’t need to be in possession of the railcard when you book (just when you travel).

Keep an eye out for offers on railcards, Trainline recently had a deal on them.

It doesn’t say in your post if you are travelling with kids or not, if not then you can could get ‘two together’ railcards which gives you the same discount but you would need to buy more railcards (family and friends railcard will discount for up to 4 adults and 1 child).

One final tip, if you are booking rail from an LNER station (eg Leeds, Wakefield, Doncaster) you’ll definitely be offered the cheapest fares, however if you plan on starting at a local station and connecting then often it’s cheaper to buy separately (e.g buy Bradford to Leeds and then a seperate Leeds to london).
