Nassau
Could anyone suggest waht to see / visit on our stop at Nassau?
Is it worth going on the organised trips? Or should we do our own thing? |

Nassau has some great shops. It is very safe and you can walk around freely or catch a jitney further afield. You can go swimming with the dolphins on Paradise Island (just over the bridge from Nassau). It has a straw market which is worth a quick look too.

Cruise ship tourist trap, IMHO.
Did a holiday in the Bahamas a few years ago. Went to Nassau/Paradise Island/Cable Beach because I kinda felt it was something that had to be done but there wasn't a lot special going on. We spent most of our time on Cat Island which is still, fortunately, very much unspoiled. |

Definitely the Pirate Museum ,shop & pub,... if you having any budding pirates...and even if you don't ! This is not a Disney excursion - but something you can very easily do under your own steam.
Just a short walk from the ship, reasonably priced, not too long and though not Disney, it is very well presented. More details here ; pirates-of-nassau/

Disney Cruise Line website has all the excursions on it. We just wandered round the harbour area, shops and straw market when we went last feb, but when we go at New Year we are planning on going to Atlantis to see the Aquarium. Kids love that sort of thing and they like James Bond, last 007 film did a bit of filming here.

There's lots of good advice on the Bahamas section on Cruisecritic.com. We did our own short walking tour of Nassau from the Frommers website, then on the No 10 'bus' to Cable Beach ($1 each way) for a couple of hours then back to the ship for lunch. In the afternoon, got a taxi over to Atlantis on Paradise Island then back to Senor Frogs by the port in Nassau for a well-earned drink!

Been 5 times now, each time a walk to the Straw Market, around a few shops for about an hour then back on ship. This year we have got into Geocaching, there are 2 or 3 hidden within walking distance of the port so will find them in August, hopefully got new GPS unit arriving from US in next few days, will be able to find them easier then.
