I was with BA and Avis and also a preferred member and I got a hold of about $70ish dollars on my credit card, they will ask for one even though there was one linked to my preferred account but this was the 1st time I had actually used Avis, I did online chat with Avis who confirmed what would be held against my card. This was April this year

Also this money came was only a hold and the hold dropped off after 7 days.

This is from US Avis website, as far as my understanding goes, it's a still $100 hold for prepaid rentals.

My husband is registered on the Uk website and he received this email. I am registered on the USA website and the booking is in my name. I did not receive this email which leads me to believe this only applies to UK car hire. The US sites terms state only a $200 if the car hire isn't prepaid, and $100 if it is.
I called avis just after I booked with BA and they told me it's just a $100 hold.

Might not be £200. All I know is it isn't anywhere near the rental amount, I just used £200 as that what the OP was using.

Yep, they told me its a hold for a full tank of fuel so as long as you fill up before taking car back, it will drop off account

Do you own a UK debit card? They will take that if it has the Vusa or MasterCard logo on it.

US debit cards are not the same as UK debit cards

We done that in the past, UK debt cards are usually treated as credit cards in the US...
