Definitely variable.
We were offered the new card over the phone.
Decided against when they mentioned £160 annual fee.

(I'm not saying it isn't good value as I have no idea tbh.)

Fundamentally it comes down to whether you gain more than £160 worth of airmiles from the card. Usually the answer is yes.

That is why I got it, when I joined there was the standard 15K miles plus a bonus of 10k miles if I spent £1,500 within 90 days plus the economy to PE upgrade on spending £10k in a year. I had a few big purchases coming up so it was worth it for me, well will be if I can spend them.

I 'think' the upgrades are only on reward flights, ie fly PE with miles for the same cost as economy miles, there is only one return or two one-ways with the reward.

As above, upgrades are only available with miles if there's reward seat availability in the class you want to upgrade to.

We were thinking the same about our VA card getting harder to find reward seats. Probably use what we have for NY then change to maybe a BA card.

I have just tried to apply online but they didn’t recognise my post code ! It’s an odd postcode granted but use it all the time - can I call them to do it manually (didn’t see anything online just heir an error saying postcode is invalid - and it’s not lol) ?

I think a big part of getting the upgrades is patience and flexibility. I managed to get 4 upgrades to PE July/August 2019, but had to move our dates by one week ,and flew from Glasgow instead of Manchester. It's very difficult to get peak upgrades exactly as you want them. Also, flying from London is probably a different ballgame altogether - I would guess the lack of UC upgrades is because Virgin know the seats will all be sold at full price anyway.
