That's odd, I've been able to pay cheques in dollars into my bank account before (although had to accept a longer delay on accessing the money and acknowledge that the amount may not relate to the exchange rates on the day that I paid it in and there was a handling fee). Did they just say no?

Nationwide don’t accept them apparently.

Barclays did - but I think that you would have to open a bank account with them... Sorry, not much help!

In general I am really happy with Nationwide but on the odd occasion I have asked them to do anything out of the ordinary they have always looked at me in astonishment and pointed out that they are not a bank but a building society and don't offer the full range of high street bank services.

Do you have another bank account with a 'proper' bank that could help you out?

The fees for converting US$ cheques to £ are quite high so firstly, are the value of the cheques high enough to bother? If yes, I think you have three main choices:

1. The easiest option would be to contact the issuer and ask if they can make an international transfer direct into your existing account, minus the fees it will cost them of course.

2. Open a new account with a 'proper' bank in order to pay them in. Maybe check the fees each will charge before deciding where to open the new account.

3. Open an account in the US to deposit them. This may be difficult if you do not have a trip planned though.

I had this issue , starling and monzo who I use wouldn’t accept a US dollars cheque.

The American insurance company sending it to me , wouldn’t pay via PayPal or bank transfers ...

So we had two options . Accept the cheque and when we went back open a US Bank account and pay it in

Or sign a ridiculous amount of paperwork that enabled the cheque to be made out to my American friend, she then banked it and sent me the money via PayPal .

It took about 2 months to sort ..

We had this, tried Starling who couldn't accept it so we ended up paying it into my Natwest account and there was a £10 processing fee I think. Worth it for me as the cheque was fairly big but not if it's a small value!

I think in your case, the easiest way would be to open up a new bank account with a UK bank who accepts US cheques.

I got paid once for a competition I was in by a cheque in US dollars and it was such a faff with Halifax. Cost £25+the awful exchange rate they gave on it.
