I think we must have been lucky then. Our insurance renewed earlier this month - existing insurer put it up by over £500 to nearly £1000pa Did a search for new insurance and it's now lower than it was last year - with it being declared as a write off (the lowest category as it's literally a fist sized dent).

I had a company vechicle (lorry) hit me at the start of lockdown. It’s been written off as repairs will cost more than the value. It’s only a dent above rear wheel arch but needs a new panel. I could take then cash offer minus £300 and have repaired but will slways have cat N against insurance. However I’ve been given a good price so taking opportunity to replace the car

There are many factors when writing off vehicles. Age and mileage are also taken into account. Some vehicles would be classed as end of life, even if the damage is minor.
A new Code of Practice was introduced a few years ago which has stricter rulings for writing off vehicles. This may assist you in trying to find out why their insurance company wrote off the vehicle.

It's appalling that a perfectly usable vehicle gets written off like that. No wonder the environment is suffering from abuse by humankind

I think my son's is category n. It was parked and someone hit it whilst they were parking so only cosmetic damage. It was written off but paid £309 to keep it. Now other son owns it, it's been in the family for about 9 years now.
