Grand Canyon from Las Vegas

Looking to do a day trip from Las Vegas out to the Grand Canyon and just wondered what the best option was and if anyone had any recommendations.

2AD and 2CH (13 and 11) staying on the Strip in Vegas. We've got a car so could drive out to the West Rim if needed.
  • Can you drive out to Grand Canyon West Airport and get a Helicopter from there or is it not much cheaper than flying out direct from Vegas?
  • If we only did a helicopter trip without a landing, are we missing out on much? (All the landings seem to be priced with a Champagne Picnic and we're not fussed about that)
  • Any companies you'd recommend or any to avoid?
  • Do you see enough by driving to the West Rim that you don't need a helicopter trip?

We did a trip with USHelitours , about 12 years ago and we stayed overnight on a working ranch in the canyon, it was brilliant. Best day of the trip as we didn't like vegas

We flew to the south rim in a plane then got taken to Mather Point and Bright Angel Lodge by bus. It was great to be able to spend some time walking around the canyon rather than just flying over it. It was mind blowing! The company we used was Vision Air but it was a while ago now. There are definitely less options for that tour but we were so glad we did it.

Any helicopter trips go to Grand Canyon west THIS IS NOT GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK . If you want to see the Grand Canyon you have seen on tv and the movies you need to go to Grand Canyon NP probably south rim.

IMHO Grand Canyon west is like going to central Croydon when you are thinking you are going to central London.

If you do go to the west rim check you are allowed to take the rental car as you need to go down unmade roads.

Edited at 05:00 AM.

Thanks all. I'll take a look at the South Rim - assume this is a plane trip rather than helicopter?

To be honest, if you can, don't go for the day, try and stay at least one night.

Another fun option is to drive to Williams (about 30miles west of Flagstaff), and take the historic train to the South rim. Spend a few hours there and get the return train. You can reserve air conditioned carriage with meals, and relax!

I'd recommend staying overnight too. Flying over the canyon is amazing, but so is just standing there and watching the colours change as the light changes/clouds move. It is amazing to watch a sunset and sunrise there.
