Pacific Northwest Aug 2019 - Day 19 La Push, Olympic National Park and a 'Twilight' visit to Forks

After a bit of a disturbed sleep –possibly due to our bear encounter the day before - we woke early and wondered back over to the restaurant for breakfast. The food was good and plentiful and we enjoyed another nice chat about national parks with our server. After breakfast Daniel and I decided to have another dip in the hot pools whilst Steve read his book in the sunshine. The pools were lovely and it was a bit of a wrench to get out but we needed to move on so reluctantly did.

Leaving Sol Duc we set off for our third stop in Olympic National Park, which is situated on the coast about an hour’s drive away. Our first destination was La Push - which Twilight fans will know is the beach featured in the films. The beach was beautiful but sadly you are unable to swim in the sea due to extremely rough currents, rip tides and it is fed by arctic waters so is freezing cold. However we were able to enjoy a walk along the beach, admiring the rock formations, white sand and driftwood.

We wondered back to the car and drove a little further down the coast to the rather boringly named, ‘Second Beach’ although it was anything but dull. There was a lovely mile long walk down to the beach through a forest which emerged onto a glorious beach with stunning sea stacks. We had a wonder along then stopped on the sand to eat our picnic lunch and enjoy the sunshine. There were quite a number of people setting up camps on the beach to stay overnight to enjoy the famous sunsets. Whilst enjoying the views we managed to invent a new game called ‘3 log’ where you had to hit 3 driftwood logs in a certain order with a pebble to win. This amused us for longer than you would think and Daniel emerged as the victorious winner in the end.

After spending a couple of hours on the beach, we headed back to the car and drove to our stop for the night, the town of Forks. Again anyone who has read or watched ‘Twilight’ will know this is the town where the story us set. To be honest it was quite a run down and had seen better days. There are a couple of Twilight themed shops but not much else and on reflection we would not have stayed there but pushed on further south. However, we were booked in for the night and after stocking up with some drinks and snacks at the local supermarket we checked into the Forks motel. The room and motel had certainly seen better days so we were thankful we were there for just the one night.

We had a swim in the pool before heading off to find dinner. I had read about a Mexican restaurant which had great reviews, but when we got there it was closed. We then tried to find somewhere else to eat and could only find a pizza place open. It didn’t bode well when we walked in and most of the seats had ripped upholstery. However beggars can’t be choosers and we ordered at the counter before selecting the least damaged seats we could find and waited for our food. The food wasn’t great and they forgot my order, but at least it was cheap!

After a rather unsatisfactory meal, we headed back to our room to watch some TV and read. That night we realised there was a bizarre, frosted window at the back of the room which had no blind and let lots of the street light in. We tried our best to block it up with cushions but unfortunately the light did stream in as the sun came up the next morning. The Forks Motel was definitely not our favourite place to stay!

Am intrigued by 3 log - sounds like a good game. What a shame that Forks was a disappointment but at least you weren’t ripped off for the pizza!

It was a surprisingly fun game, who needs electronics when you have pebbles and logs?
Forks was not great but at least it was cheap...

The beaches look beautiful, the last photo reminds me of Pfeiffer Beach in California.
A shame about the motel in Forks though, glad it was only for one night

The beaches are really beautiful on that coast although it is a shame you can’t swim in the water.

That is the advantage of a road trip, if somewhere turns out to be a bit rubbish you can easily move on.
