access to cul de sac

I can't find anything about this online but i wondered if anyone knew the legalities on this one. We live in a cul de sac of 6 houses, there are no paths and the lawns are the same level as the road. The 6 families are responsible for the upkeep of the road. Does this mean the road is private? There are some really feral children living up the road and the parents send their kids to play in the cul de sac with footballs and they even had a skate ramp set up outside our house - there is only a single carriageway into the cul de sac with walls either side. Now i don't want to be a complete jerk but i'm fed up with the balls hitting my cars and also my plants. Are we able to restrict access at all?

Is there nothing on your county council website that indicates whether yours is a private road? If you and other residents are responsible for the upkeep and maintenance to the road surface, that sounds to me like it is private

Sounds like it’s private... does it not say on your deeds?

It does sound like s private road. Maybe speak to other neighbours about erecting a small sign to say "private' at the entrance and then tell the kids to clear off. Not sure how you'd stop them though.

Apart from playing football and using a skateboard what else are they doing for you to describe them as feral... if it's that bad then contact the community police

do you think that damaging other people's property is ok? i have quite politely requested they don't kick the balls at my cars or plants! I'm sure the police have better things to do with their time. Regarding the skate board ramp, i don't think it's acceptable, baring in mind the single carriageway to have to wait for them to disassemble their ramp so that we can get into our road.

Unadopted and private are two different things.

Unadopted means the local authority have now responsibility.

Private means the land is owned by an individual, company or consortium of individuals and is registered as such with the land registry.

It can be unadopted and public if the registered owner is not known and registered. Often the frontage owners jointly maintain these types of roads. But they aren't private as such.

First step is who is the land registered too.

Could always just go and whack a private road no access sign in the ground and see if anyone complains and if it changes behaviour.

Seems wrong to discourage kids from playing outside, we live in a small close as well, but can understand the frustration if they are not kids from the cul-de-sac.

I take it that the softly approach of we don't mind you playing here but watch the cars has been tried and failed.

Sorry, but where have I said damaging other peoples property is acceptable. I was merely asking what other things they had done

So, you have politely asked them to not do it and I'm guessing they have ignored these requests... you're right the police do have better things to do with their time and if you feel that's something you shouldn't bother them with then fair enough but based on what you've written I'm not sure telling them it's private property and restricted access is actually going to cut it with "feral" kids
