Hotels are always more expensive in the summer, especially in California, as that is the height of the tourist season. If you are there over any major holidays, like July 4th, that will also raise the prices even more. You could try signing up for the email lists for the hotels you are most interested in- a lot of hotels will offer special deals..sometimes last minute...to their email list that they don't advertise on their websites.

You can also do as others here have suggested and mix in a couple more moderately priced 2 or 3* hotels. There are a few hotel chains spread across California that are moderately priced, very nice and decent places to stay, and offer perks like free breakfast which can help offset some of the costs. Look for chains like Residence Inn by Marriott, Homewood Suites by Hilton, Hampton Inn & Suites (also a Hilton Brand), Holiday Inn Express, and Embassy Suites (again, by Hilton).

Best of luck with your planning!

Hi defiantly check out airbnb or home away, we have used both on our 2 last trips and stayed some fantastic places, some with personal touch and lots of helpful suggestions from owners. In vegas stayed in signature suits at the MGM booked privately and much cheaper than through hotel

Can thoroughly recommend the Carriage House in Las Vegas. Have stayed there twice and will again in June. If you book direct you should get for around $100 per night. It's a few minutes to miracle mile mall and the strip very clean and friendly. It has a pool but no casino the tee fore no resort fees.

Genuinely all these hotels are 300 a night last week of June! Incredible. I might cash out on the deposit and just book Florida!

Wow! I know that it is close to July 4th, but for all of them to be in that price range truly floors me. Im sorry you didnt have better luck looking around at these other hotels.

Just bumping the thread to say we are having exactly the same problem - going to do the Pacific Coast Highway down to San Diego at the end of August and the hotel prices are crazy - I know it's labor day weekend at the beginning of september but even out of these dates our usual favourite brands of Hampton Inn and Homewood Suites are coming out at over 250 a night. Doesn't seem to be much difference between those and airbnb's either

Will book some rooms we can cancel and hope rates may come down a bit nearer the time!
