As Mr T M said, it shouldn't be random selection. It should be based on profiling i.e. the most likely to be carrying a weapon. When I worked at the Underground the Transport Police could set up a temporary arch within minutes - usually Friday / Saturday nights. They would pull over certain members of the public based on information / profiling etc. 9 times out of 10 they'd find something. The most frightening perhaps was a 13 year old girl who was carrying a 12 inch bread knife. I repeat THIRTEEN YEARS OLD. When asked why her response was: "If they try and knife me I'll knife them!"
Whilst you might not want to accept it this is the kind of society we are living in. Maybe now people understand why staff don't run after those who jump the gates. Is it worth getting a blade between your ribs?

I think this is good but agree with Geoff and Tom about the profiling.

I used to think the bag searches were a bit of a joke but we noticed when we were there earlier this month that security had been stepped up. It wasnt long after the Paris attacks and there were uniformed officers from the Sheriffs dept all over the entrances. The lines for bag search were long and the searches were thorough. No objections from me but as others have said I could have had anything I wanted in my pockets and would have been able to take them in.

By the way if any of you think that Disney security stops at the park entrances then you are mistaken, half the off duty cops from the Sheriffs Dept moonlight as plain clothed security in the Disney Parks.

Let's be honest any place with large crowds is under threat. The more iconic the venue or event the more it becomes a 'spectacular'
No matter what you do you cannot mitigate risk so it becomes zero. In fact yes you can but it will take days to enter the said establishment as you will have to vet every visitor and then put them through a security regime.
Airports, shopping malls, sporting events and yes Disney have to do the best they can.
Do not underestimate however what is unseen behind the scenes. Forget the dogs, deputies, bag searches and now arches there is tons more unseen all enhancing our security.
Who has spotted the guys with rucksacks and earpieces? I see them every day in every park and there is no doubt they are armed.
Arches. Brilliant idea. Don't like them don't go.

As posted above Tom, half of the off duty Sheriffs Dept are in there and like you say, they aren't hard to spot.

What worries me is they are rest day workers. Need rest to be effective!
Good luck to them and love the security they provide but it's not sustainable long term

Thing is though if off duty workers want to earn extra money they will do it somewhere - might as well be Disney. It would be better though if Disney would perhaps recruit some of them permanently and pay them appropriately

The issue with profiling in todays world means you run the risk of the " race card " being played

Really? People still think this in 2015?

Could that be because there is no 'race card' to play?

Given that the vast majority of terror attacks in the USA are by young, white, male, US nationals what race card are you worried about being played here? Or is it only OK to profile brown people?

Let's try and keep this thread on track guys. Here in the UK, most knife crime - note I say most NOT ALL, is committed by young disaffected black youth. I'm not stereo typing. It's a hard fact particular to our country. Knife related violence can feature among Spanish and Latin American street gangs who are seen by some as a growing urban problem. We now know that youth are targeted for radicalisation within Muslim communities and beyond. So each country would seem to have its own unique obvious groups as well as common ones. Profiling is more complicated than that and can involve economic and educational elements too. It really is a specialised area.
Let's remember that 9/11 targeted finance and it nearly resulted in the collapse of businesses in the USA. Disney is an American icon - it stands for the values of family, security and progress - a perfect target (Heaven forbid) for terrorists. The theme parks have to be realistic and address the problem and their decisions will have been based on intelligence and guidance from outside agencies.
It's up to us to be vigilant. You may be on holiday but you cannot afford to be complacent. Yes, it rankles but you are as much responsible for your safety as are the entertainment industry.

As for resort guests or even park guests I think there should be sniffer dogs as well as the X-rays and metal detectors. Disney aren't gonna make this take all day, let's be realistic. Disney are having to move with the times and I agree they are a huge target. Profiling is no good as that 'one' person will slip through, everyone needs to be checked - just looked at the child suicide bombers.
Anyone, ANYONE who complains about safety and security is an idiot, it's for your own safety
