Many thanks for all the replies, plenty for me to consider, split between wanting to be close to work in the city centre and being Somewhere nicer but having to commute everyday.

My inlaws live in Plympton , which is nice and quiet with easy access to the A38 into Plymouth or to Exeter. Its a bit sleepy but the secondary school is good.

I have friends in Plympton. They love it there. Really well located.

I think I’d be likely to choose Plympton myself. There are some lovely places in the city though

Actually was just thinking another good option is Ivybridge. It has a a nice small town vibe but has a lot of facilities like a swimming pool. Very close to Dartmoor. Really good secondary school. And quite importantly it has really good transport links as it is right on the a38 which means its only about half an hour to Exeter but still only 20 minutes to Plymouth, and even has its own train station.

I love Looe but agree not to live there and work in Plymouth

Summer nightmare with tourists. Winter lanes not fun if icy

Maybe give an indication of the area your work will be.

It really does depend where you would be working and what sort of place you are after. I moved to Plumouth about 25 years ago, and love you can be at beach or moors in half an hour! Any city has its bad parts and good areas. Good luck with your new job and relocation. Ate you able to visit for a weekend or two to get the feel of a few places? What are you looking at? Apartment or house?

Another option might be Torpoint area, but can be a pain if travelling commuter times on the ferry! I think as previous poster said Ivybridge might be good too.

My husbands family are from Plymstock, they now live in Callington & Pensilva in Cornwall but if I was going to live in Plymouth I would pick Plymstock. It has some good school, good transport links, and close enough to town that it doesn't take an age to get there. It's not far from the coast, or town, we love the Hoe and the Barbican. It's got a bit of everything. I wouldn't want to live in Cornwall and commute over the bridge, it can take ages especially if the weather is bad!

Plymstock is lovely but now sherford (5,500 homes when finished) is being built traffic can be bad on Laira bridge even on non peak times

en.m.wikipedia/wiki/Sherford_(new_town)

Plymstock is a lovely place to live though

Close to wembury beach, Jenny cliffe, Radford park and mount batten
