Forgive my ignorance but what is Elf on the Shelf?

Elf on the shelf is an elf that appears around Christmas, you can sit him on the shelf but you can also move him around the house and he can get up to mischief. He reports to Santa about good or bad behaviour to make sure that the children of the house go on the right list (naughty or nice) he comes alive at night (when he visits Santa and does his mischief) he goes back to Santa during the night of Christmas Eve. Our elf keeps an eye on the grandchildren. But if you google "elf on the shelf" you can find more information.

There is some amazing pics on google. ive seen pics of him sky diving using toilet roll, eating a packet of biscuits but leaving the crumbs. doing weight lifting with marshmallows. really imaginative stuff. I tried doing it for my kids last year but they just said its u doing it mum. me eldest was 9. wish I had seen this when they were younger

I did this last year for my children and can't wait to do it again this year. I got the elves from ebay though. We are in Lapland 28th Nov - Dec 1st so Father Christmas is going to personally give them their elves this year and their first antic will be in Lapland!
