You have to live here to understand the issue, its not as straightforward as people think and never will be. This goes to the soul of Americans on both sides of the argument and unfortunately they can't find a middle ground.

I personally know very liberal people who want their right to hunt, with guns, to remain. To "take a deer" once a year is a right, that's how they see it. Coyotes attack children and joggers, and other wild animals attacks pets. A gun is seen as a protective instrument. I live in Dallas and I have seen bobcats roaming the streets for example.

A lyft driver was shot a few nights back (not fatally) in what appears to be a dispute, whereas a police officer shot the daughter of the fire chief (who shares the same office building) whilst attempting to shoot her dog (there is body cam and it looks like he was spooked and acted in haste).

Even Trained people get it wrong. But those same trained people also can, as stated, act quickly against a threat which isn't always human.

There is someone killed by a gun every day in Texas. But here is another fact: Since Nov. 7, 2000, at least one person has died on Texas roadways every single day. And they've not tightened up the driving test (its easy to pass) or do they put a lot of effort into vehicle safety.

Death appears to be a more accepted risk here whether you like it or not.

I don't have answers. Just pointing out that its a lot more complex than people think. You cannot change culture overnight. It takes decades.
Very good post.

I think most of us realise it's not a straightforward issue, in the same way that solving the problem of knife crime here is. I also don't believe that anyone wants, or thinks it possible, to remove guns from US society.

Actually, I don’t think anyone is saying the issue is not complex, the clue is in the words. Gun Control
I live in an area full of guns, used for hunting, we don’t have people running around with AKA automatics, rapid fire, with the ability to shoot 9 people dead in one minute.

The hunters here are aghast at the weaponry that appears to be normal in the USA. How the hell does a 21 year old living on a suburban estate get a licence and the ability to purchase such weapons.

With all due respect, this has nothing to do with the culture, this is plain common sense. You don’t need an assault rifle to shoot deer, Bob cats or your neighbors

To me, this is the crux of the matter.

No one is saying America should ban the sale of ALL Guns. It just won't happen.

But I believe if you want a "right to keep and bear arms" as your Second Amendment says, it should be a hand pistol only.

You don't need a Mack 10 or an Uzi.

There have been 33,028 total shooting incidents in 2019 as of Sunday, resulting in 8,734 deaths and 17,308 injuries. Figures quoted by the Gun Violence Archive.

I don't think that compares to London.

Less than 100 fatalities in London this year
thesun/news/958783...-north-london/

And comparatively safer than the USA.

I still feel if you want to talk about knife crime to start a thread as comparisons between mass shootings and deaths via knife are meaningless.

To get a more accurate picture you would need to compare deaths via stabbing in both countries otherwise you are comparing apples with oranges. I suspect this is less about free speech and more of an exercise to steer the conversation away from the matter at hand.

It’s typical of people to undermine the argument about gun crime and compare to knives and when the get called out about claim freedom of speech to talk about something unrelated and claim it’s cos they want to make the country better. How? It’s not simple cos if it was people would have done it already.

I look forward to your thread about knife crime in the UK

Won’t really be a real comparison as knife crimes in America are relatively low. The reason, they have easy access to guns. Makes carrying knives kind of pointless.

Whilst both are far too high and unacceptable, the two really don’t compare

It's not a competition to see who has the worst statistics...the weekend in El Paso and Ohio is an awful waste of innocent lives and Mr President couldn't even get the town right.
