Where are all the ponies?
It used to be easy to find a safe, sound pony for a beginner.
I never had a problem for myself, my kids or my friends kids. What has happened? I'm not looking for a competition superstar just a confidence inspiring 4 legged friend who will take care of a nervous teenager who is desperate to have a pony/horse within their capabilities. Everything is project, under 5, potential, quirky or over 10K with BS BE or whatever winnings. My PC friends don't know of anything either, it's not like things are moving word of mouth. Grrrr. Rant over. And calm.

Prices have just gone stupid this year. A friend is looking for a small, sane horse and they are £6k and over. She just wants a pet to ride and last year this would have cost about £2k
I don't know what's going on. Maybe at the end of winter they will get cheaper as people can't cope with the work involved in looking after them Dogs and cats apparently the same price hike |

Exactly what the owner of the yard I ride at has been saying! After much discussion and thought I had decided that owning a horse wasn’t for me earlier in the year, she was actually glad as she can’t find any of the schoolmaster, mother/daughter, family friend type horses. Even where riding schools are closing down the ponies are being bought by clients and not even reaching the market. She is hoping as Floray said that once life is heading back to normal and people want to shop and go in holiday again, prices will drop and more will be available. Just hope that there isn’t an increase in neglect/cruelty cases😓

Prices have gone crackers. Bit like dogs, loads of novices decided they had time for a horse, and wanted something safe they could ride.
The problem is, pets you can ride are gold dust. Especially if you want to be able to hack, you are looking for the safest of the safe. I bought mine in May, we did really well as she is very safe, we can let toddlers clamber all over her, but she still is a spooky hack. It could be worth contacting the riding schools as so many are struggling costs wise and may be willing to downsize. Where do you live Mo? And what size/budget? Assume a nice cob type? I do see the odd one so could keep an eye out but we are in the NW x

I'm Central Scotland, thanks, quite happy to travel when we are allowed to. I have contacted pony club DC's, riding schools, dealers, importers even rehoming charities. I just want a safe sane 14-15hh any age, even in it's 20's as long as it's healthy/sound. Buy or loan. For a 14yo 5'1 nervous beginner to have fun with on the farm, not interested in competing. Budget up to 4k, even if we were to double the budget there doesn't seem to be much about.
I bought an unbacked 3yo 15 months ago well bred PBA for £1800. I reckon if I wanted to I could treble my money today. Crazy. I really think there will be huge welfare problems next year.

As a pony owner in France prices are cheaper here! My daughter’s coach just sold one to a rider in Manchester! So many stables are struggling - during the first lockdown the owners couldn’t visit or ride their horses (the stables owners had to feed and put them out every day) and this time round owners can still visit and exercise their horses but no group lessons.

We used to breed Welsh Mountain ponies. We have sold a few unbroken ponies over the years to someone local who backs them and makes sure they are bomb proof before selling on as first ridden ponies. Her kids are now getting a bit big for the tiny ponies and I have noticed she is advertising some bigger ones now. Search Laigh Hapton Games Ponies on Facebook - they are in Ayrshire.

I do see a few cobs on here
smarthorses/ads And there is cobsnplods in Leigh. The place I got Lottie from would be ideal, they don’t have anything suitable in now. Would be a bit sharp, but I’ll certainly keep my eye out x Lottie would have been ideal, she was £3.5k so they are out there
