Matrix

Has anybody every booked using the Matrix site. I know you cannot actually book through it but have to take the code to a travel agent, but do the well known travel agents, such as Hayes Travel etc actually book the flights at the prices shown.

Also, do the prices shown include luggage?

I have found some great flight prices for next year, but have never booked with info from the site before, so I have no idea whether or not it actually works

Any good TA should be able to find the flights you have found on the Matrix and at the price quoted on the Matrix. It purely depends on the airline re: baggage, if not included then is fee payable. If you include a hotel (one night or more) or car hire with your TA this makes it a package so only a deposit is payable.

It is possible to book some fares found on ITA Matrix online, via an unaffiliated website called bookwithmatrix.com

However, it does not allow you to book everything you find on Matrix, I don’t use it myself.

You can also sometimes book fares found on Matrix via airline websites or OTA sites like Expedia, but you might have to do some fiddling around with search to find them. Other fares are just a bit too complicated for many online booking engines and have to be booked offline.

As for booking via agents, the issue is really whether the individual agent handling your booking knows their way round flight reservation systems to book the less obvious stuff. Some agents working for general high street agencies may be good at this, but your odds are better with the agencies who specialise more in flights, eg Trailfinders, Flight Centre etc.

You can also call the airline, their call centres are effectively travel agents for this purpose, and their staff are working on the res systems all day (of course some know the systems better than others). You need to call the airline marketing the fare, eg if you see a BA flight being sold under a Finnair flight number, you need to call Finnair to book, since BA might not be selling that fare, even though it is operating the flight. Airline call centres won’t always let you book certain multi-airline combinations you might find on Matrix, and it would be necessary to book with a travel agent. Airline call centres may also charge you a telephone booking fee, but can sometimes be persuaded to waive it if the flights cannot be booked online on their site.

Edited re instructions on how to use main page

This is an example for Orlando:-

Departure London
Destination Orlando - Click on nearby on the right and choose 100 miles tick box for Orlando and Tampa(if you want to consider TPA)
Choose either exact dates or calendar of lowest fares
Fill in the boxes for number of passengers, cabin, stops
Untick airport changes
Click Search

When you find a fare that suits it is usually best to take it to a reputable travel agent and they should be able to book it for you if the fare is still available.
