Adventures in Public Transport:The Return - San Diego to Disneyland via Amtrak
We had a bit of a lie in this morning and didn't get up until around 8.30am. After getting ready it was time to start packing as today we were moving on to Disneyland. Our train wasn’t until 1.30pm so we could take our time. We were all done by 11.15am so we checked out, settled our bill and ordered an uber to take us to the station. The Santa Fe station is another lovely old station but nowhere near as big as LA’s.
As we had got there so early I enquired at the desk as to whether we could use our tickets on the earlier train. The lady said that was fine however the trains were running with delays today due to an earlier line problem. We went to join the boarding queue for the 12.35 train. The train didn’t end up arriving till around 1pm by which time the boarding line was huge. I think a few people were like us and had decided to catch the earlier train. We wondered whether they would even manage to get everyone on the train but we boarded and everyone got seat. The only thing was we forgot to get a seat on the right side of the train for the ocean. The journey was another pleasant one although by the time we were at Oceanside they had run out of seats. Not very nice for the people standing but as the conductor came around to collect tickets he said he would only scan those that were seated so as they people standing could either use the ticket again for a different journey or claim a refund which I thought was a nice gesture. We arrived into Anaheim station just before 3.30pm and decided to jump into a taxi rather than Uber as there was one waiting there and we knew it wasn’t far to Disneyland. Before long we were spotting the familiar palm tree line avenue and turning into the driveway of the Disneyland Hotel. When we had booked our trip we had originally booked the Hyatt House as we were going to stick to budget this year but then three weeks before our trip Disneyland release a late summer offer that were could combine with an orbitz discount code and then two days after DH got a bonus at work so he decided to treat us, it didn’t take much twisting of my arm it was fair to say. We had stayed here last year for a special trip and had loved it and so we were excited to be back. Check In was fairly busy but before long we were jumping in the elevator and heading up to room 2009. Ours was one of the standard room but the great thing if you’re in the Fantasyland tower is that you can see the park and fireworks from your room. The plan was to head to the pool and pop the last of the laundry into wash while we were there. So we unpacked a few things, got our swim stuff on and headed down. The only thing was when we got to the laundry it had been knocked down and was being rebuilt. Hmmm ok, so the plan had to be adjust. They had a sign to say we could use the laundry at the Paradise Pier so off we trundled over to there. We popped the laundry on and instead decided to grab a bite in eat from their lounge while we waiting. Laundry finish we headed back to the Disneyland Pool and relaxed for a bit. It was really busy at the pool, we were there the exact same week last year and it was no where near that busy so I started to wonder how busy the parks would be. We headed back to the room around 7.15pm and I made a start on the ironing while DS watched some TV. Just before 9.30pm we found the channel on the TV for the fireworks and got ready to watch. We headed to bed after they had finished as we wanted to get an early start tomorrow, doing the tradition we had started last year of the playing the magical headed before we went to sleep. What a difference the trains are in the US compared to Britain. You're lucky to get a seat here and you certainly wouldn't be able to use your ticket again or get a refund if you have to stand.
What a treat to stay at the Disneyland Hotel. I love the headboard!

Sounds like a straight forward journey for you - can you imagine how much money the train companies here would lose if they didn't charge people who didn't have seats! 😂
How lovely to be able to stay at the Disneyland hotel and what a fab headboard 💫 |

Hi
Just read your trip report and it’s amazing! We are planning for California next year and hoping to do it without a car, how easy was the Amtrak from sandiego to Anaheim? Silly question but how do you get your luggage once off the train? Your report has inspired me!
