Fly Drive vs Book Separately
I notice a lot of folk go for the fly-drive option - I've always booked separately and shopped around.
Do you find fly drive cheaper or is just a case of convenience ? Talking about flight only, not packages... Thanks for any responses :-)

I usually find flydrive cheaper but it was not this time. It does allow you the option to pay only a deposit which helps some people

At the moment my flydrive price with Virgin is around £3600, pretty sure I will be able to get my flights for between £2100/£2500 and then car here for £500 so it makes sense for me to wait..and book separately which I have always done

When are you looking to go ?
If you are planning after mid July 2019 the flights are not released yet anything you book will be expensive as the agents are taking a punt on what prices will be and then adding a bit Edited at 04:16 PM. |

Generally, reading between the lines, most people are booking a Flydrive, initially, as it allows you to pay Deposit only otherwise you are paying for the flight in full at time of booking.
You don't have to pick up the car but you would be better crunching the numbers, I know the TA's that advertise a "Free car" generally by the time you add insurance, it's cheaper elsewhere but in this case you are paying for the car & it's just a matter of how much the insurance costs. SD

We did a BA/Avis fly-drive last November because the price including 4 week car hire was less than VS flight only.
BA are one of the companies whose car through Avis is fully insured. Beware some fly-drive offers where the insurance is criminally low. Mick

I wouldn’t normally book a fly drive with the usual travel agents as in my experience they are more expensive than I can arrange it all myself. That said we’ve booked a flydrive with BA for next June as we got a 7 seater car included for 17 days cheaper than just booking the flights themselves. All car insurances are included with Avis. Bonkers but a great deal.

You don’t have to pick the car up. On one trip the additional insurance costs were more than booking a car with someone else so we just didn’t pick it up. On that occasion virgin holiday flydrive prices were less than buying just flights.

I hopefully helped a Dibber a few days ago renting with Tui who only include the state minimum SLI and no CDW. Tui wanted £600 just to upgrade the insurance. The lady ditched it and rebooked a car fully insured for about £300.
