Decimalisation!
For anyone ‘of a certain age’...
‘It’s coming up 50 years since we went ‘decimal’. At the time it cost 5d to post a letter. A first class stamp is 18shillings and 6d today!’ Edited at 12:08 AM. |

I hope they show some of those old getting ready to go decimal adverts again. Maybe they won’t seem so baffling second time around.

Never to miss an opportunity the Royal Mint has released 50p coins to celebrate the occasion. Starting at £10 each.
Edit. And who on here remembers paying 4/11d for a gallon of Jet petrol albeit that was a promo and it was normally 5/6d a gallon. For the younger Dibb people Jet was a chain of garages.

Inspired by this thread, I’ve just had a google of what old money was like. Absolutely totally baffled me.😅

Was there some kind of phase out of old money and in with the new money? How did that work if so?

Now Brexit is done I am starting a crusade to go back to LSD, vegetables in lb and oz and bent bananas.

But Tom it will be a limited edition and they are only minting 50 million. So you can be confident that in 20 years time they will be worth ------------------- 50 pence.
I also remember school dinners being a shilling a day. 10d for a steak & kidney pie from the shop outside the school gates and 2d for an Embassy from the shop next door. We didn't need Jamie Oliver to advise us on a well balanced school dinner. Mick

This old BBC article is excellent reading about how it happened.
bbc/news/business-12346083 It explains how coins were introduced and how the tanner (6d) survived for a while as it was worth 2.5p

I was born late 70’s so though I missed out on the whole money thing, I understand weight and length in old terms as well as metric. I was taught metric measurements at school but at home when I helped with baking etc. We had one of those old weighting scales with the heavy metal lb/oz weights that balanced.
