Mobile Hiatus hernia surgery

My gran is 84 and has a large hiatus hernia the surgeon has said she will do the surgery but it's her choice... she wants it as her health is deteriorating but worried how she will cope after it

Has anyone had or no someone that's had the surgery how was the recovery

Hi - I have just had mine yesterday - hitus hernia repair and fundoplication (where they wrap upper part of stomach around oesophagus). Its normally under general anaesthetic and a keyhole surgery. They repair the hernia with a mesh. Recovery 2-3 weeks for the stitches etc. Not sure if it applies to your gran but I am on a liquid diet for 1 week, then pureed food for 2-3w then soft food 2-3w.

As above. Same procedure ⬆️⬆️

M I had this op c30 years ago (back in the days when NHS thought key hole was risky and BUPA sat on the fence so paid hard cash rather than have my chest opened up from top to bottom as my Father had to endure in the 1960/70’s and never really recovered his appetite)

Yes I was in my early 20’s rather than an OAP but I had the op on a Friday and the following Monday caught the tube to work.

On a liquid diet for months and gradually introduced solid food but still unable to eat rice or things like French stick/bread as I simply can’t ever again swallow such foods as my hole is now too tight but haven’t had a spell of heartburn or acid reflux again.

It’s a simply short op (well it was for me ) so I guess the question is is she well enough for a general ? If so then be guided by her consultant
