after the recent tesla news about dropping the basic model 3 to $35k, i'm really excited to see what else crops up this year to compete. hopefully by the time my current car is paid off in august, I can start looking at what's around and get myself something small and ridiculous and perfect for my impending midlife crisis

Tesla $35k USA will equate to £35k here- unless post Brexit we do a trade deal with USA with zero tariffs- that would then knock 10% off.

I’m working on various Hybrid/battery sales currently.
I think yiu will be surprised at the pace of battery development, there is a push to reach 280 miles in BEVs (battery electric vehicles)

But, personally I would still go for a PHEV (plug in hybrid) as it gives you the feet of both worlds, The ability to charge at home and on the road (chargingvsites are increasing) but with Tge ability to use tgebpetrol engine as well.

Hybrids that are not plug in can only use the petrol generator to charge Tge batteries, so the MPG is not stellar.

At present however FC tec and infrastructure is well behind EV in this field , although I prefer this idea personally.
Aberdeen leads the way in Europe. At last count they had 10 hydrogen buses with another 10 on order, 12 council run Toyota Mirais inc a “taxi”for hospital patient runs, a few mid size vans, a road sweeper, and now taking delivery of dual fuel ( diesel/ hydrogen) bin collection trucks.
The council operates and owns the fueling stations.

The iPace wait was at least 6 months so I am waiting for Tesla Model 3 again as I am one of the first reservation holders in the country (maybe first 10 as I reserved 8.45 31/3/2016). I fancy the performance version but with white interior added (a must) and Autopilot I am not sure I can bring myself to pay that much money for a car.
There is not range issues with a Tesla, just pull in a Supercharger, and they are just starting to roll out Supercharger 3 which charges at 1000 miles per hour. So if you are on say 30% and want to charge to 80% you are looking at 10 mins on one of them. It has a real world mileage of around 260 summer, 230 winter.

Having had a C350e on order for 12 months from launch and then losing my rag with Merc and cancelling my order, im now at the point that i want to go down the EV route, though waiting until 400mile plus estate range is more common or opting for a longer range PHEV. (even a tiny 500cc range extender engine would do the trick just to bridge the gap with the infrastructure. )

Well, after some inspiration on here, I just bought a Tesla Model S. I spent quite a while hammering down the price. I got a new S75D (dual motor) with premium pack (upgraded stereo, sliding glass roof, air suspension etc) and got them to give me enhanced autopilot (£5k) on a PCP deal for £6400 down, and £668 a month. I will save a good £150 a month in petrol. Also got 2000 free supercharger miles. Not bad for a car worth a good 76k. It's a 4 year deal and they gave me a good minimum value of 31k so I reckon I will have something approaching equity of my deposit back at the end if current levels of depreciation hold up (valued independently as worth 41k after 4 years now, and I note 2014 versions are going for around 40-45k). In fact they are selling 2016 versions now on their website at only 5k less than mine was. |I had read they had big Q1 targets to hit, so I thought now or never. A lot of money, but hey ho.
