We wemt in july and stayed air b n b. The kitchenette was so handy as food was literally too expensive to justify eating 😂 I also couldnt justify £200 on a couple of hours in a man made pond, so we went to the secret lagoon instead! All natural and a tenth of the price!

I personally wouldn't recommend driving in Iceland if you're thinking of going in December. I lived there for 12 months and found the roads to be quite dangerous in the snow - I know you'd have winter tyres etc but unless you're used to driving in those conditions I wouldn't recommend it. Also in December it gets dark very early. The airport is approx 45-60 mins drive to Reykjavik itself.

As for hotel v airbnb - I'd stay in hotel if you find a nice one that provides free breakfast and tea/coffee. Eating out is mega expensive in Iceland (we used to joke that we needed second mortgage just to eat lol). Hotels in Iceland are not usually the plushest so not many have indoor pools etc that you might expect.

We stayed at the Centerhotel Midgadur. It had a free breakfast and was round the corner from one of the tour pick up points.
