ETA and ESTA for Alaska cruise?
Because my brain has nothing better to do it’s just occurred to me that tho we leave from Canada for our Alaska cruise next summer, we will be entering Alaska (US) so does this mean we will need both?

Sod’s law, I’ve just renewed estas for this year’s trip, but DH’s passport expires between trips so he’ll need another, I’d best look into how doing my nieces is going to work, tho I’ve plenty of time

If you fly into Canada, you need the ETA!

I took an Alaska cruise - flew into Anchorage and out of Vancouver to Denver so I got a Canadian eTA - wasn't 100% sure I needed it as I was arriving by boat (don't need it) but leave it by air (wasn't sure).
In hindsight think it was overkill - as this states we DON'T need it. If your flight connects in Canada on the way to Alaska you would need it. I've just noticed you said you are starting in Canada - so if you are flying into, say, Vancouver before your cruise, you will DEFINITELY need it. canada.ca/en/immigration...eta/facts.html Travellers who need an eTA: Visa-exempt foreign nationals need an eTA to fly to or transit through a Canadian airport. These travellers do not need an eTA when arriving by car, bus, train or boat (including a cruise ship).

You will need both and ESTA and an ETA. We did a Canada train trip followed by an Alaska cruise and you are entering and exiting Canada and the US.

Ok, I've looked through my paperwork and it appears I did not have to do the ETA as we took the ship into Canadian waters (as Di says above).
So we got on the ship in San Diego, sailed up to Vancouver, then did another cruise that started in Vancouver and went to Alaska. We just had our ESTAs and I believe it was because we were sailing into Canada, not flying or driving. Joa
