What a great idea, I'd love to catch up with some of the Disney's movies I haven't seen. Need to clear my diary for a few weeks 😀

This is a brilliant challenge, I am enjoying reading along. Our eldest son studied Walt Disney for his dissertation for his English and Film degree, so we have seen quite a few of the older and more obscure movies as he watched them for research. They are truly pieces of film history, and fascinating to watch now after all these years.

Following this, it’s definitely something I’d like to do in the future!
All the ones I've 'reviewed' so far we watched on Disney Life. Amazon had an offer on of a three month subscription for 99p if you own an Amazon Fire Stick. We decided it was fate!

I have a strong suspicion we might end up keeping the subscription once the three-month trial is over though, as it's great having all the Disney movies at our fingertips!

We are a few movies ahead and some of them we have had to find on Youtube and other places online, but it hasn't been very difficult.

Thanks, we're really enjoying it and we feel like we're learning a lot about the history of Disney!

I'm glad you're enjoying it.

I totally agree, it's great to learn a bit about the history of Disney. There's so much I didn't know! Your son's dissertation sounds so interesting - wish I'd thought of doing something as cool as that for mine!

Great project. Have you thought of doing a blog or vlog?

We love the ‘Adventures with the Wife in Space’ blog where a guy takes his (non-fan) wife through the whole of classic Doctor Who.

Day 8: Victory Through Air Power (1943)

Day 8: Victory Through Air Power (1943)

This one's a bit...different. It's not like the package films, which come before and after it. In fact it's not like any other Disney movie!

Here goes! Have you seen it?

We were a bit apprehensive about this one. What stereotypes were we going to encounter? For anyone who has not had the joy of watching Victory Through Air Power, it's essentially a case made through animation for the US to use more air power during the war. It was based on a book by a Russian-American air-power advocate. Apparently Disney found the guy very convincing as he also features heavily in the film.

The animation is very diagrammatic. The diagrams make their point, I suppose, they are just horrendously boring to watch. Apparently the movie was a success at the time and persuaded Roosevelt to change strategy (this may or may not be an exaggeration by wiki). But I don’t think it will have persuaded the general public to watch more animated films!

In the last 2 minutes the film changes approach, and instead of animation showing the movements of planes and the Nazi incursion into France etc. we have a massive US eagle attacking Japan represented as an octopus. This is out of keeping with the approach of the rest of the film and creates tension (it's the best bit of the film sadly), but is also obviously highly problematic.

My sister (who I'm watching the movies with) actually studies and teaches the intersection of propaganda and popular culture (although not in the US or WW2 context) at university so she found it interesting to see Disney's approach to making the case they wanted at the time.

Definitely not a fun watch though. Unless you're a true completist, I'd give this one a miss!

Next it's back to The Three Caballeros!

This was the type of thing my son studied in detail for his dissertation(so it wasn't all fun 😀 ). He covered Walt's political views and his influence and affect of his views as war propaganda etc (although I am sure I am explaining it badly 😀 )

He also studied Three Cabelleros, which is far more entertaining.

Haha that does sound fun. I think this is the closest I'll come to doing a blog though. My reviews aren't really detailed enough!
