Help! A week in in the west - where to go?
If Battlebots is filmed in April again (as seems pretty likely) and our son gets to take part again, me and OH might be based in Long Beach for a fortnight from about mid-April. If so we'll have a car and will take some full and half day trips out from there during that time, although we'll have to be flexible depending on the filming schedule.
We want to tag an extra week on the end, taking us up to about May 5th or 6th (we can be a little bit flexible). How can we make the best use of the time, particularly during the extra week? We'd love to see a bit of coast, but then there's the Grand Canyon... We're not in the slightest bit interested in Vegas and don't want to spend every day in the car - natural wonders, history, wildlife and places to go for a hike and admire the view are much more our thing (New England was our idea of heaven a couple of years ago). I'm completely bemused by everything there is out there, so can you help me pin down a few ideas please? Happy to take an internal flight if that saves a day's drive, and to book multi-city flights. Fingers crossed Battlebots 2019 gets confirmed so we can make the trip. Last year we went out for just three days for the final rounds of the competition. A bit crazy but lots of fun, and no jet lag when we got back because we weren't out there long enough to adapt to the time difference! Edited at 02:08 AM. |

Hmm, March/april weather could dictate what you can reasonably do. 2 of my 3 choices could be hampered by snow!
1. Up the coast road flying home from San Fran. 2. A visit to Yosemite for fabulous hiking options, via sequoia, then home from Oakland or San Fran 3. Drive to Zion and Bryce Canyons, again fabulous views and hiking options, then fly home from Vegas. You could also even squeeze a day trip to the west rim of Grand Canyon. You wouldn't need to stay central Vegas if you didn't want.

Thank you, I’ll investigate those when I get home tonight. Our extra week will be late April/early May, so hopefully no snow by then. Although we did get stuck in snow in Morocco in November and had to wait for a snow plough, so have a bit of a track record! 😂

The coast from Long Beach to Santa Monica isn't bad for short trips, walk around Point Vicente or drive up to Redondo Beach or further. Of course beaches south of you are just as nice. A 2 hour drive should get you to Palm Springs, visit Joshua Tree National Park, have a stay at Desert Hot Springs with its mineral and thermal pools. Take the tramway and there are short or long hikes 9000ft up in Mt San Jacinto State Park. San Diego is highly rated, otherwise as you don't want to spend all day in a car you'll be looking at internal flights, where the sky's the limit (lol). Flagstaff, Phoenix for canyons, (there is a night train I believe to Flagstaff), Reno or Oakland for Yosemite. So much choice it's really up to you and Google!
