Other people can tell you more as I haven’t done one! But I believe the idea is you can pay a small deposit for a future cruise while onboard and get a nice discount. Has to be used in 2 years I think, but doesn’t have to be a specific cruise.
We did the 7 night Med cruise on the Magic as we couldn’t afford to travel to the US that year. It was utterly amazing and we are now hoping for the Northern Europe one in 2020 from Dover. Yes, the Europe ones are more expensive, but we would save on travel, and when you think it includes all your food for a week, it’s not so bad!

I'll try and remember
So as Gill said its basically a prebook for another cruise. Its $200 per room and you can only book 2 rooms max but the rooms are links so only 1 reservation. You don't have to choose a cruise to use it on but when you then spot a cruise it counts towards your deposit. The benefits are:
There are restrictions on which cruises these can be used on. It lasts for exactly 2 years from the date you book it so best to book on the last day of the cruise if you are going to to give you the maximum length of time to use. So I have a placeholder booked but am not actually using it as found a better deal with Virgin Holidays when I added on the WDW side of things and flight. Going to book another placeholder though on my next cruise. If you cancel a placeholder you get back your money as well just for info

We are doing a four night on the Dream in August. This will be the shortest cruise that we have taken but we are doing it as we are taking our son and daughter in law who live in Orlando and our daughter son in law and grand daughter who live in the U.K. We don’t get to be all together very often so we are all very excited.
Will report back after the cruise and let you know how it went.

Thanks gismo1554,that's very useful to know, like I said to Gill, it's going to be hard to resist booking again! It's good that you have up to 2 years from paying a deposit and also getting it back if you decide not to go.
