What’s the connection between the creepy man that works in the uni to Rose. I felt a bit let down by the ending!

Yes he obviously liked her and fancied his chances and yes she was leading him on but it all seemed a bit far fetched that he would go as far as killing her 'dad' like that in the end. (I was worried he had killed that black dog though!  But I was kind of relieved to see the knife was still clean when he was waiting for her 'dad' to come and find the dog).
