I've done ours this evening, the confirmation email was as follows

Thank you for applying for ESTA. your application number is 1234abcdxyz. You will need this number to retreive your application. You can check the status of your ESTA at https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/

I noted the times...
We applied at 19:08
email at 19:17
checked and approved at 19:38

Tea was ready just as the payment details were going in, so aside from a couple of refreshes to see if it was almost instant, I wandered off, filled my face and came back half an hour later. I suspect it was done at 19:17, though that's not what the email advises.

Thankfully the volumes mean it would have to be delegated to officials and they would look for threats not just people calling him a pillock... imagine if he was doing it personally, noboy would get in !
