We stayed at the Cow Hollow Inn - reasonable rates and included parking. I am not a big fan of public transport and loved the freedom our own car provided as we visited the surrounding areas of SF

Thanks guys (feeling the Dibb love again ). Will have a think! SF is at the end of our 3 week touring holiday and was only really an airport home stop, but we decided to have a day there. We might stick with original thoughts and get the BART from Castro Valley.
Thank you Pompeyboy for the parking link, will, keep this handy in case we decide to chance it!

We drove from LA to San Francisco stayed over night. When we got there we went straight to the park near the golden gate bridge, parked there for a few hours was reasonable I think and could walk across the bridge from it.
Then moved to a parking garage at fisherman's wharf which was $50 for up to 12hr I think. If you park there for the full 12hr then it works out not too bad for the centre. Then we moved onto hotel which was out near the airport so free parking. The next day we got the train in so was free parking at the train station. I think the train was about $5 each.

We specifically selected a hotel at Union Sq because it had good links through the BART from San Francisco Int where we had landed and also because it was close to the Powell St Tram down to Fishermens Wharf area... and further, because it was close to Budget car which in itself is only a block away from the Bay Bridge ramp and the way out of town.
Parking at our hotel was $75 a day and I never at any time felt that I would have benefited from having a hire car. (Much less paying $225 to park it). On exit day , we left the hotel, wheeled our suitcases a block and a half before entering Budget (and Avis). Within a minute and a half of leaving Budget, we were on the Bay Bridge heading out of town!
