miami keys and orlando

Next year we are wondering about flying to Miami and staying for two nights and driving down the Florida Keys. We would then want to have 4/5 nights in Orlando maybe staying on international drive before flying home.

We can go for two weeks or maybe a few days more than two weeks starting the second week in July. Have looked at driving distances and know that isn't an issue but looking for some guidance on Miami and the keys if possible. Are we trying to fit too much into that time as well?

It all depends on how much you want to do, it's personnal choice.

In 18 Days we did:

1 night in Miami
3 nights in Key west
1 night in Tampa (for Busch Gardens)
2 nights Hard Rock Hotel (for universal)
1 night in PSR (for 60 days FP)
10 nights in Kissimmee

Would other people do it? - It may not appeal to everyone.
Did we enjoy it? - oh yes!

We have 14 nights, going soon!

Land in Miami, Hilton Hotel opposite Dolphin Mall for food and shopping.

Off to Keys, 2 nights at Marathon Holiday Inn. On way there plan to stop off at Pennekamp State park for snorkling - maybe go out to a reef. Next day find a beach or visit marine centre and evening at Key West. Our first trip to the Keys, so a nice taster, and also gives us some leeway before our cruise.

We will drive up to Miami for a 3 night cruise to Bahamas (first cruise so again a taster!).

Then to Rosen Inn @ Poite Orlando on I-Drive for 6 nights. We will do DC, SW, AQ, Vb and Univeral before going to Hard Rock Hotel for one night and Express Passes.

Then finally we will head off to Vero Beach for last night, spilling up the drive back to Miami - evening of shopping at the outlet mall and breakfast on beach at Mulligans before a final paddle in the sea...

May take longer than expected to drive to Key West from Miami, due to traffic, speed limits, and accidents.
Good tips on TA posted by Buffet guy if you search MIA To Key West Speed Limits.
We went to KW without booking any accommodation, and everything was sold out because of Pride, but that was in June.
Even so, the Keys are one of the few places we won't go without having somewhere booked.

Having stayed in downtown Key West, just outside, and the outskirts, we definitely enjoyed downtown best. It was great walking back into hotel, rather than waiting for taxis, trolleys, or finding our way back through quiet residential streets in pitch dark.

We invariably multi centre and love driving in the USA, our last 2 being..
2017 Pensacola, Destin, Tampa, Orlando Daytona Beach.
2018 San Francisco, Monterey, Valencia, Annaheim, San Diego, Long Beach. Leaving from LAX
Our next being
2019 Boston, NY, Dayton OH, Orlando, Naples. Leaving from MIA
2011 we did Orlando, Cocoa Beach, Duck Key and down to Key West before leaving from MIA..

The drive from Miami to KW is deceptively long and much is single carriageway with no diversions possible. As Pino_Spetzberg has already alluded, there can be snags and delays. In addition, It is a long way back from KW to Orlando. I would look at spending my 1st night around Marathon before moving on to KW next day and spending 3/4 nights there. KW is a very interesting place with lots of history, Hemingway, birth of Panam airways, very quirky and Fishers shipwreck museum not to be missed. The bars are good fun too!
On the long way back up, a late afternoon stop close to the Northern entrance to the 7 mile bridge is recommended. A walk along the old bridge (now a footpath) is a great experience and in addition, there is a lovely, restaurant underneath the entrance to the new one with palm leaf roofs, open walls and fabulous view as the sunsets.

5 days in Orlando seems a strange one as it has so many attractions on each of the 3 major tickets, (DC Ultimate, Disney and Universal), only DC of the 3 looking cheap(ish).. but then again, I don't know how many times you have visited.

For me.

Land Miami and first night Marathon area.
3/4 nights Key West
1 night close to 7 mile drive N end.
10 or more in Orlando.

Hoping it helps with what will undoubtably be an amazing vacation.

We done this a few years ago and it always goes down as one of our best holidays.
Arrived in Orlando and done parks for three days.
Done a day trip to New York.
Down to Kennedy Space center and watched a Rocket launch.
Down to Fort Lauderdale for one night.
Down to Miami for a three day cruise to Grand Bahama.. started our love of cruising😍...back to Miami for one night and then down to Key West for two nights...Dhs all time favourite place...back to Orlando and home.
This was nearly 22years ago..so lots of things have changed... but with lots if planning it can be a fabulous holiday ...and there was no internet then... it was all done with phone calls😂
