Slug/snail killing

It's becoming like Glastonbury in my garden in the evening with all the slugs and snails on my lawn. Last year I put some old beer into a bucket and walked around the lawn picking them up and putting them in the beer bucket (wearing gloves of course).

I genuinely feel guilty doing this, but I can't put slug pellets down because of my doggie.

Any humane suggestions appreciated?

There was a Hosta grower on Gardeners World who used a garlic solution and there wasn't a chewed leaf in site so might be worth a try.

If you have potted flowers or raised beds, put a band of shiny sticky tape around the pot about half way up. The slugs and snails can’t get a grip on it so can’t get to the plants.

I hate killing any animal so we mainly plant in raised pots and it seems to work well

Raised pots with a copper band works here. In addition, every wet evening the kids go out, and for pocket money, collect them all (over 100 in 15 min earlier in the week) and chuck them in the compost heap where they do a sterling job, and are sometimes gathered as "dinner" by the local hedgehog population. Couldn't simply kill them for the sake of it.

You could collect them and take them for a long drive to the local park! They do return, but slowly!

I like all the humane methods - we have a dog but wouldn’t use slug pellets anyway. No wonder wildlife is affected with people putting poisons out 🙁

We cut the bottoms off of milk bottles and dot a few around the garden as shallow dishes with cheap beer in them. You'd be amazed at how many slugs are in them in the morning.
