A house for £35k up north!
I know it's a small house (not much smaller than my house though) but it's only £35,000 yes £35,000 and it would cost that much just for a loft conversion on my house.

I have to ask if anyone knows why houses are so cheap in Middlesbrough?

I don't know Middlesbrough particularly well, but I suspect the old adage.

Location, Location, Location...

also, they are both up for Auction, so I suspect they just put a low price on to get some interest.
