Over the 10 or so times we've been with Virgin across the last 17 years, I have never paid for any seating benefit on the way out. We are awake, and excited, so can cope. I've always fancied flying out premium but can never justify the cost to myself as I can easily manage in Economy. I have paid extra to come home in premium or Economy Leg room seats 3 or 4 times. I feel there is a tangible value as it allows me to get a much better quality of sleep on the return flight. One year we actually booked premium for the return straight off and I can't remember the cost difference, but the rest were upgrades to the original booking. When ELR seats were available separately they were about £35 each and we would happily pay that, or go to premium if it wasn't much more. Once the upgrade starts to be multiple hundreds we tend to suffer in economy and improve a different aspect of the holiday.
