Are you sure you need a full visa, or would the much easier ESTA (travel authority) be good enough for you?

Assuming you have a UK passport and have a clean criminal record you should be ok with an ESTA but you should double check

Do you need a visa? Most people travel on an Esta. It allows you to travel to the US and is currently $14 per person.

The citizen ship question is the pertinent one...

If it takes a trip to the embassy before visiting the states that's a proper pain in the backside.

Quote from the CBP ESTA page:

"*British citizens only with the unrestricted right of permanent abode in England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man."

So I would assume that it has to be a Visa.

unrestricted right of permanent abode means they are free to live in the Country, if they so wish. Therefore, a Visa would not be required.

But OP is posting from the Falkland Islands, which is NOT one of the countries listed -
"England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man"

so a visa WOULD be needed from the way I understand the quote.
